Congratulations! You are ready to take the next step in your relationship with your significant other. How exciting! But, how do you take that next step? What actions do you need to take towards purchasing an engagement ring? Here’s a few tips to get you started:
- BUDGET
- Will determine a lot, like the 4 C’s; cut, color, carat, and clarity in regards to the diamond alone.
- Also take into consideration how much the setting will cost. (Diamonds, No diamonds, Halo, No halo, Big diamonds, Small diamonds, etc.)
- DISCLAIMER! You can do research about diamonds to get a better understanding. However, it’s always best to see the diamond for yourself in person! What’s on paper can be different than the physical stone!
**Couples sometimes shop together or they shop separate to keep the proposal a surprise!
** If you still want to get your partner what they want, you can ask friends or family or check out their pinterest or other social media pages!
-
- Now that you have determined a budget, then comes the shape and size of your diamond.
- There are multiple shapes to choose from: Round, Oval, Pear, Princess, Cushion, and Emerald.
- Rounds are the most brilliant of all the diamonds, which means they sparkle the most! (But they’re all beautiful!)
- Each cut is priced differently in regards to the 4C’s.
- SETTING
- This is what the center diamond will sit in. Whatever the style, it will complement the main stone.
- There can be diamonds or no diamonds. Halo or no halo. Twist or no twist. Vintage or Modern. There are so many styles to choose from!
- Along with style, comes color. You have white, yellow, and rose gold. Or if your significant other is allergic to certain alloys (i.e., Copper, Silver, etc.) they can get platinum.
- Platinum is more “hypoallergenic,” it’s not recommended unless there is an allergy. It’s a softer metal, so it is more prone to deeper scratches and it turns into a gun metal grey when not maintained well enough.
- Ring size is very important!! If you’re not sure what her ring size is and you plan on keeping this a surprise, sneak a ring away from her jewelry box or ask someone who could potentially know!
- TIME FRAME
- Make sure you give yourself (and us) ample time between ordering the ring and when you want to propose so that you can get it in time!
- Sometimes settings need to be ordered in to get the correct size, design, and/or color, so allow yourself enough time to get the ring from when you plan on proposing!
- Different manufacturers have different delivery times.
- PROPOSAL
- If you plan on proposing abroad, be sure to keep it on your person as much as possible!
- It’s safer on the finger rather than in a box.
- Do it as soon as you can, you don’t want it lost or stolen!

I am glad that your article brings to light the importance of keeping the budget in mind prior to the purchase of the engagement ring. For a year or so, I have been doing research on how to get the best engagement ring for us while remaining in the price range that is suited for us. I think that I will do further research on the subject in order to determine what style of ring would be of the most interest to both of us.
Thank you Lloyd! I’m glad that this article brings certain information to light that people might not think about! Let us know if you would like anymore help.
It’s great that you elaborated on if you want to keep this a surprise and you’re unsure of her ring size, steal a ring from her jewelry collection or consult someone who might know. My cousin is thinking about looking for engagement rings this weekend because he wants to pop the question to his girlfriend soon. Before my cousin buys an engagement ring to propose with this weekend, I’ll take note of your tips and let him know.
We’re glad you found this post helpful! Let us know if your cousin needs any help looking for an engagement ring!
I appreciated your advice about leaving plenty of time between ordering the ring and proposing so that the person could have it in time. My brother hasn’t even chosen a ring yet, so I will share this with him. He might need to set his proposal aside until the end of the month.
Thank you, Elaina! We always try to accommodate for rush orders, but it’s best to give yourself a cushion of time.
I liked your advice about giving one’s self enough time between ordering the ring and when they want to propose. If so, then my brother needs to look for a ring soon. Because he plans on proposing to his girlfriend this Saturday.
Thank you for your comment Lana! Yes, I hope your brother finds something in time! If he needs any help, he can call us in store! (412) 434-6007
